The team from BMW Motorrad East Rand put together a lekker weekend away for some of their adventure bike customers, to give them a taste of what their bikes can actually do and to increase their riding skills and confidence…. And YES! Also just to have a lekker time riding in one of the most beautiful parts of our country.
Blanche gives us a little bit of insight to the planning and how much fun they had:
Everything starts with an idea…
My thought was, an offroad weekend with BMW customers to Tzaneen to illustrate the on and off road capabilities of the R1300GS.
Where else would we stay than Oppie Oewer offroad and 4×4 adventures? Gerrit du Toit snr and his son Gerrit, previous winner of the GS Trophy in 2021, had one specific route in mind for us – SERALA…!!! The Serala route is one for the books and takes you right out of your comfort zone with a good mix of boulders, erosion, sand, rocky up and downhill, silky smooth grassfields, water crossings etc. A whole day of riding fuelled by a breakfast for Kings first. Alta du Toit made sure every rider was fed and full of energy to face the hard riding ahead of all of us.
In total, 17 adventure bikes departed from Oppie Oewer Saturday morning. It was a sight for sore eyes. Looking back in my mirror, seeing the line of bikes behind me gave me goosebumps all over. We followed the tar for about 12 km before we got off and disappeared into the Magoebaskloof plantations. We entered another world.
The R1300GS was the “wave-breaker” in front of me, following on a R1250GS. Effortlessly it succeeded in the goal of the weekend to illustrate its off road capabilities. The biggest feedback of the day from everyone was the surprising lightweight of the bike, the ease of handling.
After a full day’s riding, an exhausted bunch of dusty adventurers returned to Oppie Oewer where the day’s challenges were shared.
But this won’t be the last time. Another great idea was born:
Let’s do this once a month. Oppie Oewer also do tar outrides. So much opportunity for the RS’s, the XR’s, GTL’s etc. Just watch this space.
The next weekend will be somewhere in October to Oppie Oewer.
