Kawasaki KX327X

The All-New Kawasaki KX327X

For years, riders wanting a modern large-capacity two-stroke cross-country machine have largely looked towards Europe. Kawasaki has now stepped firmly back into the conversation with the all-new KX327X, a purpose-built off-road racer that combines traditional two-stroke character with modern technology.

Positioned as a dedicated cross-country model, the KX327X shares its foundations with the new KX327 motocrosser but receives a host of features aimed specifically at off-road competition. Fuel injection, electric start, smartphone connectivity and a cross-country-focused chassis package signal a major step forward for Kawasaki’s two-stroke programme.

Engine

At the heart of the KX327X sits an all-new 327cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder two-stroke engine. It marks a significant milestone as Kawasaki’s first fuel-injected two-stroke powerplant, moving away from the carburettor setups traditionally associated with the class.

The system uses a 39 mm throttle body fed by dual injectors. One injector operates at lower engine speeds for precise fuelling and throttle control, while a second injector comes into play higher in the rev range to support stronger acceleration and top-end performance. Kawasaki has also developed a dedicated electronic exhaust valve system that adjusts according to engine speed and throttle position to broaden the power delivery.

A six-speed gearbox is standard, featuring an ultra-low first gear designed for technical terrain, while a hydraulic clutch provides a consistent lever feel. Electric start is powered by a lightweight lithium-ion battery, and Kawasaki has retained a traditional premix lubrication system rather than adopting oil injection. A primary balancer shaft is also incorporated into the engine design to reduce vibration.

Suspension

The KX327X receives a factory-style KYB suspension package developed specifically for cross-country competition. Up front is a 48 mm KYB coil-spring fork featuring the company’s Air-Oil-Separate (AOS) design and low-friction Kashima coating. Internal valving has been tailored for a combination of technical sections and higher-speed trail riding.

At the rear, Kawasaki employs its latest Uni-Trak suspension system paired with a fully adjustable KYB shock absorber. The setup has been tuned for long-distance off-road racing, with a focus on maintaining traction and rider comfort over varied terrain.

The suspension components are mounted within a lightweight aluminium perimeter frame derived from Kawasaki’s proven KX platform. Strengthened lower frame rails have been incorporated to enhance durability and front-end feedback during off-road use.

Brakes

Braking duties are handled by Nissin components front and rear. The front wheel carries a sizeable 270 mm disc, while the rear uses a 240 mm disc. Kawasaki has also equipped the KX327X with a rear brake disc guard to provide additional protection during cross-country competition.

The package reflects the bike’s intended purpose, combining competition-focused hardware with the durability required for demanding off-road environments.

Wheels & Tyres

The KX327X rolls on a traditional off-road wheel combination, featuring a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel. The wheels utilise rugged Excel rims paired with machined hubs, underscoring the bike’s competition-focused intent.

Tyre choice comes in the form of Dunlop Geomax AT82 rubber, developed specifically for off-road conditions. Kawasaki has also included several cross-country-specific additions such as handguards, a skid plate with integrated linkage protection, and a forged aluminium side stand.

A large-capacity 8.5-litre fuel tank aims to extend range between fuel stops, while its translucent construction allows riders to monitor fuel levels at a glance.

Electronics

One of the most significant departures from traditional two-stroke design is the electronics package. The KX327X features selectable power modes controlled via a handlebar-mounted switch, allowing riders to switch between Normal and Mild engine settings.

The motorcycle can also connect wirelessly to a smartphone through Kawasaki’s RIDEOLOGY THE APP KX2 system. When paired with the bike’s communication unit and GPS hardware, riders can record trip logs, monitor lap times, review riding data and access engine telemetry information. Maintenance reminders and engine-hour tracking are also integrated into the system.

For a purpose-built off-road racer, the level of connectivity is notable and highlights how far modern competition motorcycles have evolved beyond purely mechanical machines.

Ergonomics

Kawasaki has paid close attention to rider movement and adjustability. The KX327X features slim bodywork and a streamlined layout intended to make transitions around the motorcycle easier when riding aggressively off-road.

The ERGO-FIT system allows riders to tailor the riding position through adjustable footpeg positions and multiple handlebar mounting options. Two triple-clamp mounting positions combined with reversible handlebar mounts create four potential handlebar positions, allowing riders to fine-tune the cockpit to suit their preferences.

Additional touches include a Renthal Fatbar handlebar, ODI lock-on grips, a contoured slip-resistant seat and wide footpegs, while a quick-release side cover allows tool-free access to the air filter for easier maintenance between rides.

The Big Picture

The KX327X represents one of Kawasaki’s most significant off-road launches in years. By combining a fuel-injected 327cc two-stroke engine with electric start, modern electronics, KYB suspension and a dedicated cross-country chassis package, Kawasaki has created a machine that bridges traditional two-stroke appeal and contemporary off-road technology.

It is a motorcycle that signals Kawasaki’s renewed commitment to the high-performance off-road segment and brings a fresh option to riders looking for a purpose-built cross-country racer in the large-capacity two-stroke category.

Will the KX327X make it to South Africa, we’ll have to wait and see…
