Stofskop

Stofskop Skops Stof!

Stofskop
It's all really fair... Or is it?

Stofskop ‘24 at the Randfontein Oval track was ridiculous fun. It’s racing, but not really. You do get winners… but not really.

It’s all about the “Gees” of riding your bike and turning left… Or is that right?

Pics by Motul and Foley Foto…

The Stofskop is a social day bringing together two wheels, dust and a lot of no-nonsense fun. It’s time to head into the garage, move all those boxes of junk, the rusting exercise bike and blow the dust of your Stofskop Steed, maybe leave the dust.”

The crowd has just as much fun as the racers...

Yep! Thats a 1200GS against a Kawasaki 100...

Seriously. This is one event that we try so hard not to miss. A motley collection of riders – mostly of ill repute on a motley collection of motorcycles of all shapes, ages and sizes.

“While some of the motorcycles involved in the action at Joburg’s Randfontein Raceway may have seen better days, Stofskop itself continues to grow and evolve. This year’s event featured nearly 100 riders – some 20 more than in 2023. At least a quarter of the field were women, and lady riders featured in almost every category, from Inappropriate Road Bikes to Moped Mashups, as well as the revitalised Sidecar Shenanigans.”

It’s more about having a good time than actual racing.

Ok We Lie!

Once the flag drops, things do get pretty serious and we saw some great dices through the day.

Many of the folks present get into the spirit of things, donning outfits that make the opening of the Paris Olympics fade by comparison. We saw a whole herd (Is that the correct term), of minions on or in their minion mobiles, Mario and Luigi were there dicing a vespa (With a sidecar Nogal!). Mrs pasta was in town with a serious bowl of spaghetti on her head (aero’s were a challenge), and so the list goes on.

The pitbike brigade was out in force with big peeps on little bikes, little peeps on little bikes – we saw ladies beating the boys (But we are gentlemen of course – ladies first!), we saw sidecars railing through the corners with the co-pilots hanging off at crazy angles – you couldn’t pay us enough to try that…

Sidecar Shenanigans with Mario and Luigi (back), Dark Angels (overtaking) and our first Tuk Tuk at Stofskop.

Costumes came adrift on the track, with racers actually stopping to collect their misplaced hairnets and condiments. It was really funny.

There was even a custom Stofskop Dakar prototype competing...

Complete with the most up to date digital roadbook on the planet!

We saw a BMW GS1200 dicing a Hero 200, a RAD powered Boulevard taking on a classic MZ… a South African Superbike champion, Greg Geldenhuis on an electric bike –  and so the day progressed.

The crowds are a massive part of any event like this and – especially the minion section, cheered the riders on louder than the Marques fans at moto GP!

Motul made the track look factory and had racers (that’s a broad term), on the track,  a photo booth and all sorts of interesting people  sharing Motul love on the day.

Late for work?

So… Who won?

Well, no idea. Here was a prizegiving with lots of happy smiling faces, but to be fair, we don’t think that anyone actually has a clue who won.

It was another one of those epic, whacky events that keep you grinning with comments like “Did you see that?” being passed all day long.

The food was good, the soft drinks were cold and the racing was a ridiculous amount of fun!

Roll on Stofskop ‘25. If you’ve never been to one, make sure that you get there next year!!

Attitude is everything...

“I wouldn’t be the organiser of Stofskop if I didn’t enjoy a little chaos and confusion in the name of fun and family entertainment,” commented chief organiser, Chris Shelvey. “It was especially great to see just how diverse the South African motorcycle community has become,” he added.

Chris with some fans...

“Stofskop never disappoints, and this year was no exception,” commented Mercia Jansen, Motul General Manager for Southern and Eastern Africa. Motul is the main sponsor of the event. “It was great to see how the industry is embracing Stofskop, and also motivating more motorcycle owners to retrieve their machines from their sheds and garages. With riders of all ages taking part, we can feel confident about the longevity of the local motorcycle market!”
