Let’s be honest. New bike prices are often out of our reach, but thankfully, there is still a healthy crop of used machines on the market. We are always on the lookout for unusual and sometimes, rare, so when this pre owned 790 Rally at Bikeshop Rivonia came into the crosshairs we thought we’d check it out.
We sauntered over to the sales desk, filled in the demo form and took off before they could change their minds.
About the KTM Adventure R Rally:
The limited edition KTM 790 Adventure R Rally was restricted to just 500 units globally.
It was based heavily on the KTM 790 Adventure R, with the same steel trellis chassis and the compact 95hp LC8c parallel twin engine.
The biggest upgrade was the special, Dakar developed WP XPLOR PRO suspension. Built in the same department as WP’s Factory Racing equipment the setup offers similar levels of performance for extreme riding.
The additional 30mm of suspension travel front and back helps clear those nasty lurkers, but it also gives the bike a tall seat height of 910mm for this special model.
The height can be a bit tricky when you navigate traffic and stop at the traffic lights.
The gunmetal blue finishes are tasty and the Akrapovič exhaust, carbon fibre tank protectors and Quickshifter+ as standard just make it such a good value option.

This ones really good. Cosmetically you can see that the original owner has taken good care of her. There are a few extras fitted that you need to factor in when you talk about value for money.
But the most important thing is how the bike feels and rides. And this one still feels amazing.
Tickle the throttle and she roars to life, snick her into first gear and roar off into Rivonia’s manic traffic… you do really feel like the king of the road – and the roar from the pipe makes cars pay attention.

Quickshifting through the six speed box is all good and smooth and the autoblip on the down shifts will leave you feeling seriously manly. 190KPH is easy – and it’s how you get there that makes it so much fun, but always remember what tyres are fitted – these ones are more dirt oriented Mitas Units and they are not rated for sustained high speeds.

The fun really starts when you hit the gravel. KTM’s are always good off – road, but the Rally is just something a bit extra special. You absolutely do feel like Daniel Sanders as you wind it along the fast gravel.
This is a rally machine, Light, fast and so responsive.
The trick suspension is what makes it just that much better and begs you to open up a bit more, but we’ll wager you’ll run out of courage before you even think of flat taps.
It’s a properly lekker feeling, especially with that Akarapovic pipe roaring along in your ears.

We returned the bike somewhat reluctantly.
Some lucky bugger is going to scoop himself a very fine, unusual machine.
R210 odd K at Bikeshop Rivonia.
In addition to their, quite frankly, astonishing range of road going bikes, Rivonia has a serious selection of dirt and adventure machines. You need to go and have a looksee!
