The Arai Tour-X5
The Arai Tour-X 5 is the updated version of this Japanese manufacturer’s versatile adventure bike and touring motorcycle helmet. It features many updates over the the Tour-X 4, which we really liked already.
One of the clever innovations is the new inner liner that has adjustability front and back, as well as either side, which can be achieved by removing peel-away foam pads from around the crown cushion. Each pad allows for 5mm of additional room. With the relevant ones removed, the T-X 5 will slip on to all head shapes and sizes perfectly.
It’s a great idea and it should negate the age-old head shape debate. We reckon you’ll be seeing this innovation on all kinds of helmets soon.
Thanks to the redesigned interior it’s now possible to fit speakers without having to remove the cheek pads. There are also flat surfaces either side to mount an intercom unit and a pocket in the neckroll for tucking away wires.
The liner can be removed for a full wash and refresh when needed.
The visor is a new design, what they call a Variable Axis System (VAS-A) visor system. It’s developed from the RX-7V road helmet and includes quick release side pods for a quicker, tool free visor change. On the old model, the peak and visor were attached to the shell with screws at either side. Now, the T-X5’s peak and side pods come away as one unit at the push of a button, after which you just rotate the visor upwards to lift it off.
A clear visor is fitted as standard and they include a Pinlock anti-fog insert. Different tints are available.
Fully prepped for glasses, the Tour-X 5 allows the arms to slot into channels at your temple. We’ve got mates who wear this lid and who wear glasses and all have commented that it’s a good design with do undue discomfort.
Arai has updated the venting on this one.
This one boasts the Arai 3D logo duct. This sits over twin 10mm ports in the shell and draws air in when operated via a slider at the top. Two positions, closed and open when it’s clicked in. There’s a further three position vent at the top for even more airflow.
The chin vent is double the size of the previous model. It has adjustability both inside and out to regulate the flow and direct it either onto your face or up the inside of the visor.
The T-X 5 has two permanently open exhausts at either side towards the back. Above those are three 10mm holes hidden by the spoiler and covered by a three position lever.Â
Arai still honours the philosophy that a smooth, round shell shape is the safest profile for a helmet, so the Tour-X 5 keeps the Arai shape that is so familiar.Â
With the peak fitted it has a cool dual sport look to it. Peak off – bring on the streetfighter vibes.
Adventure helmets have to do more than just look the part. They need to be comfortable over long distances, keep the airflow coming when things heat up and above all else it needs to make you feel safe every time you fasten the chin strap.Â
