Hosted by the Bogwheelers club, who have been in Donnybrook park for 40 years now, the Zimbabwe Summer series is destined for bigger things!
This year saw 30 international riders descend on the countrys capital Harare to compete.
Riders from all over the world in all classes – from the juniors right up to MX1. Yup – riders came from Europe to race – even in the 60 and 85cc classes!
Unheard of!
France, Germany, Austria, USA, South Africa, Italy, Zambia, Australia… you get the idea… All came to race.
Better Brands bought 30 brand new bikes from the KTM stable for the overseas riders to compete on – and it was magic!
There were two days of Supercross, Wednesday and Friday evenings, that were fully packed with spectators under the spotlights. The track was built by a French team, SX specialists and from a spectator point of view it was great!
The MX happened on Sunday – also packed with some fierce racing on the famous Donnybrook MX track. It was watered throughout, perfectly prepared and the riders loved it!
No major injuries through the weekend, maybe a collarbone that was quickly sorted.
The classes were massive – 50cc, 65cc, 85cc, 125 high school, Masters, Vets, Ladies, MX1 and MX2. Not bad at all.
A whole day of bar bashing entertainment.
The purse was 40 000 USD across all classes. Not too shabby!
A brand KTM 300 was raffled off to raise funds for Zimbabwe Dakar hopeful AshThixton
All in, a fantastic event! Fireworks, Freestyle MX and bar to bar racing!
The plan for next year is to bring 80 riders from across the globe to take part and for this event to make it onto the world supercross map.
International Joe Tavares brought the 20 internationals to compete this year. Better Brands Petroleum were the main sponsors of the event. That company is owned by Harare Businessman and politician Scott Sakupwanya who’s children Judah and Mudiwa love the sport.
Nice One!
“As the sun sets over the Donnybrook Track I make my way back to SA and arrive the following day at sunset. Had the most amazing time in Zimbabwe and the international motocross and supercross races where the best I’ve ever seen. Definitely a world class show.”
