Supercross fans, buckle up. The 2025 FIM World Supercross Championship is shaping up to be the most stacked season yet, with some of the biggest names in the sport confirmed and more still to come. And yes, it all ends right here in Cape Town this December.
The latest rider announcements include none other than Jason Anderson in SX1 and Max Anstie in SX2. Add those names to an already loaded roster that features reigning SX2 World Champ Shane McElrath, South American favourite Enzo Lopes, and last season’s SX1 podium man Joey Savatgy – and you can see where this is going.
And that’s just the start. We’ll also see two time World Champ Ken Roczen back in action, reigning SX1 World Champ Eli Tomac dropping in as a wildcard, plus AMA 450 Champ Cooper Webb and Tom Vialle, the 250 East Supercross king. That’s a lot of star power on one gate.
SX1: Jason Anderson is gunning for the title. He’ll face off against Roczen, Tomac, Webb and a bunch of hungry full time contenders across five rounds.
SX2: It’s a grudge match. Max Anstie wants his 2023 crown back, but Shane McElrath has no plans of giving up the red plate. Enzo Lopes will have entire stadiums chanting his name, especially in Argentina.
Wildcard entries for the Cape Town finale at DHL Stadium haven’t even been announced yet, so expect the drama level to crank up even higher.
The championship fires up under the lights in Kuala Lumpur on the 18 October, then it’s off to Buenos Aires where the “strongest rider line-up outside the USA in 20 years” is promised. Vancouver hosts Round 3, the Aussie Gold Coast gets Round 4, and then the whole show heads to South Africa for the grand finale.
“Cape Town is set to witness the very best that supercross has to offer,” says Tony Feldman from Showtime Management. “We’re bringing world-class riders, the fastest, most fearless athletes in the sport today. It’s going to be massive.”
Teams to Watch out for will be:
Quad Lock Honda: McElrath, Savatgy, and young Brodie Connolly – defending their team title.
GSM Yamaha: Max Anstie joins Jordi Tixier and Maxime Desprey.
Pipes Motorsports Group: Kyle Chisholm and Robbie Wageman flying the flag in SX2.
Venom Bud Racing Kawasaki, Rick Ware Racing, MotoConcepts Racing: all bringing stacked international talent.
Stark Future: New team on the block, riders still to be announced.
Behind the scenes, the Geneva Agreement signed earlier this year has locked in long-term stability for the championship. That means proper prize money, support for teams, and the ability to attract the sport’s biggest names through 2027. Meaning, the fans get the best riders, at the best events, year after year.
Shane McElrath sums it up nicely: “I can’t wait to get back out on the global stage and defend my title. The lineup is incredibly strong, but I’m ready to do it again against the best in the world.”
The South African GP wraps up the season on 13 December 2025 at DHL Stadium, Cape Town. Expect fireworks, bar-banging battles, and history made under the lights. Tickets start from R450 and are already on sale at www.showtime.co.za and www.ticketmaster.co.za
