100 plus die hard enthusiasts rolled into the blistering heat at a private reserve, Madidaba lodge, where the Dirt And Trail team hurled them up and down rocky passes all day.
This really was not a race they said. It’s a Funduro!.
The loop was tight and short. Orange was the easier choice. Pink was for the tuff ladies and gents. And the general idea was to see who could complete the most laps in a given time.
It took a good rider roughly an hour to do a loop – and expectations were that the toughness and heat would result in very few laps for the day…
That was true in some cases where some of the guys and girls did one or two before doing the sensible thing and retiring to the pool for the rest of the day. But some of the tougher (Or is that certified insane) competitors really went all out to beat the clock.
We’re so impressed with some of the junior riders out there, we watched them lead their dads and teams up the climbs, never flustered and the vasbyt was pretty amazing.
11 year old Juan Smit 4 laps. 14 year old Ethan Stanbury 3 laps, two of those with a flat wheel.
The Champs, a team of junior riders between 12 and 15 put in four laps.
Some of the manne can ride – you’d see one rider sweating and wheezing his way up a climb – and next thing he gets overtaken on the outside by a rider who looks properly fresh and just rolls on by. “Pardon me ol chap!”
Vasbyt. That’s the name of the game. The guys scrummed. Emergency repairs on the climbs. Lots of helping hands. The sun beat down mercilessly. Each rider a winner. When of the junior riders bikes broke, one off the marshals lent him a bike just to get a few laps in. How flippen cool is that!
The top Ysterman rider for the day was JJ Oosthuisen. He managed an impressive 9 laps.
Ruan Van Wyk squeezed 8 and Berni Forholt and Jaco Badenhorst managed 7 each.
In the teams division, EMD Racing matched team Dad And Lad with 6 laps. Each rider in the team does laps and the total is divided by how many riders in the team.
Hubby and wife team Porridge got 3 laps in.
Legends all!
We’ll be doing another one sometime this year so watch this space and we’ll keep you posted.
Big thanks need to go out to everyone who helped to make it a success.
Madidaba Lodge.
Petrolheads, Eldin and Raymond. Quarry Kwagga’s Marcel and Jessica. They volunteered, marked routes, climbed in and did a great job with the marshalling and cleaning up too.
The Adventure Company Team. Always lekker.
Michelin for all the branding. Sabat and Spanjaard for the giveaways.
We really do appreciate it.
See you soon.
