It’s that time of year again, the annual clash of the provinces, MX’s answer to the Rugby Currie Cup. Each province sends along a selection of riders for each MX class, from the smallest tjoggertjies barely out of nappies right through the the maddest, most testosterone fueled teenager and young adults, some of the fastest ladies you will ever see on a dirt bike – right through to the granddads in their sixties. North vs South truly is a multigenerational family affair with military precision.
Literally 60 seconds after the last rider cleared the track the start gates were dropping again, the occasional wipe out was dealt with efficiently and professionally with the medics assisting and clearing the fallen riders within minutes so no races had to be red flagged. The spectators aplenty lining the edge of the track were not disappointed, the riders put on a spectacular show. We took along the newest addition to our team in the office, Deon van der Linde, (Deon vdl Photography), to experience his first North vs South….

Deon says:
We headed for Bloemfontein to go and experience my first North vs South Motocross event. I have only heard stories about how awesome this annual event is. We arrived on Sunday morning and BORC was buzzing with people out in full force trampling through the mud courtesy of the nice Saturday night rain. Looking at the absolutely pristine track, it was set to be the perfect condition for the perfect race day. With around 270 race entries things were going to get bonkers.
It was thrilling to see a lineup that filled the gates, the sound of roaring engines as the gates dropped and the nerve wracking feeling watching all those racers bunching up to get through the first corner. Amazing for the lack of a better word. From there on things got even more intense as riders battled the deep ruts and took on some crazy jumps. ‘Seventh Heaven’ was the highlight of the day as the crowds gathered to watch these boys and girls flying through the air at almost dizzying heights and ridiculous distances.

For a first timer, an incredible sight to see. What an experience it was to witness this event first hand! The fight between the provinces was electrifying as no quarter was given in the slightest. When the dust cleared it was the South that took the day by a mere 9 points….
658pts Vs Norths 649.
The regional results made it very clear that Gauteng is the big dog with a spectacular score of 3543pts to take 1st. KZN came second with 2639pts, Free State 3rd 2635pts, the Western Cape 4th 1701pts, Eastern Cape 5th 1216pts, Limpopo 6th 199 pts and North West 7th with 32pts.

To all the organisers, we tip our hats to you. What an extremely well run event. Clockwork can learn something from the way the day was handled. Well done to an epic race day!
Believe me when I say that if you have not yet attended a North vs South race, do yourself a favour and make a plan to get to the next one. There will be no disappointment whatsoever. The only problem is that we have to wait for a year before we can have our minds blown.
See you next year ladies and gentlemen.
