Making Farming fun again

Big Boys Legend 125cc

Make Farming Fun… And commuting, security, deliveries, commercial…

“Dad! That’s a farm bike, not nearly as cool as my dirt bike…”

That was Dirt & Trails most junior members’ comment when we offloaded the legend on the farm and told him to take it for a spin. Once he had it sussed, we couldn’t get him off the darn thing.

A great little bike with the heart of a lion

Simplicity: You get what it says on the box.

That’s what you need on any little workhorse. No frills nor fuss, a purpose built. Low maintenance bike that can do the job. You don’t get a whole lot more simple than this one. It’s powered by a tried and tested four speed, air cooled 125cc that does not stretch your arms, but that will purr along all day. Electric and kick start of course, handy on any bike.

With good protection from whatever the bush throws at it

Built in charger. Now that’s cool because the guy on the other side of the parking lot who has dozed off under a tree can never use a flat phone battery as an excuse.

Crash bars and brush guards. Well you know how the guy who checks the fences can swerve three times and still get hit by that pesky walking tree.

A carrier. For the discerning farmer who needs to load up a chainsaw to cut that aforementioned tree back, or for the school kid who can tie his satchel onto the tie points with bungee cords. The carrier can be removed to accommodate a passenger.

A quiet exhaust pipe. That won’t send the cattle or sheep scarpering up into the mountains. And you shouldn’t wake the poor guy who’s catching some Zzz’s under the tree…

A comfortable seat: Plush for lots of hours in the sunshine. And low seat height, so that climbing on and off is not a chore and stopping at the traffic lights is easy  even for the shortest rider.

Suspension: That feels quite plush, perfect for an everyday bike like this.

Trail tyres: Kind of a 50/50 pattern, suitable for road and dirt use.

It has a nice comfy seat
Built in charger - a standard feature
Crash and brush gaurds - also standard
Trail Tyres, great for dirt roads
Carrier - Also standard, got to get your own milk crate though
Low maintenance drum brakes

Performance:

Ergonomics are sensible with wide handlebars and a comfortable relation from feet, to bum to bars.

This is a full sized 125cc four stroke, so you shouldn’t get into any trouble. It has a solid bottom-end with decent torque to get across the sand and mud or through the river. We tackled the stream here and she didn’t splutter or mess about. The big (like huge), front mudguard keeps the rider muck free.

On the open stuff, she whips along smoothly through the gearbox, showing a top speed of 90 KPH on the simple analogue dash, and she’ll comfortably do 70 KPH all day long. That doesn’t sound fast. But do you really want your farm manager, delivery or security guy to go any faster?

Drum brakes bring everything to a halt pretty quickly.

The kids on the other hand have plans to modify the air box and gut the pipe…

We did just on 100 KM’s and the fuel gauge barely moved. These days that means a lot. Big Boy claims measly 1.7 liters/100km fuel consumption on a 10 liter tank.

The bike has a quality feel, it’s interesting to note how bikes from China seem to get better all the time.

And at R21999.00 this bike feels like a great value proposition. Given the importer’s footprint in SA, parts and service items should be readily available.
