Smith Dominates first SA Supercross.

The opening round of the SA Supercross Series kicked off with some style at Terra Topia, drawing an impressive crowd highlighting the growing appetite for Supercross in South Africa.

The atmosphere delivered on all fronts. Good food, cold drinks and a solid mix of vendors kept fans entertained between races, while trackside action gave spectators exactly what they came for. 

Practice & Qualifying

As spectators streamed through the gates, riders lined up for practice and qualifying. Classes were split into A and B groups, each receiving 15 minutes of track time. The running order began with the Pro Class, followed by AM, Pro Mini. The Ladies, setting the tone for a full day of Supercross action.

Ladies – Group A

The Ladies were out first and delivered some of the most entertaining racing of the day. From the gate drop, the pace was fast and the battles intense, with aggressive lines, confident jumps and no shortage of commitment.

It was a strong showcase of just how competitive the ladies’ field has become and had the crowd fully engaged from the get-go.

Ladies – Group A

AM Class – Group A

The AM Class produced a thrilling contest, with close racing right to the chequered flag and constant position changes on the tight Supercross layout.

#418 Cruz Martin led early before a fall opened the door for #28 Evan Frost, who capitalised to take the win. Martin regrouped for a hard-fought second place, while #29 Blake Frost completed the podium.

Pro Class (One Heat)

The Pro Class did not disappoint, delivering fast, skillful and downright wild racing.

#337 Slade Smith grabbed the early lead but faced relentless pressure from #450 Luke Grundy on his new Husqvarna and #300 Trent Valsecchi. Smith held his nerve to secure the win.

Ladies – Group B

The intensity stayed high as the Ladies returned for Heat 2. #16 Kelly Beegte put in a commanding ride to take the win, followed by #603 Marlinka Zurich and #13 Madison Robyn.

AM Class – Group B

The AM riders came out swinging, with fast, aggressive racing and battles all over the track.

#94 Trenton Kretzmann claimed the win after a strong ride, with #30 Brody Bircher in second and #38 Ethan Louw rounding out the podium.

LCQ – AM Class

The Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) gave seven riders one final opportunity to earn a place in the main event. With nothing to lose, the intensity was sky-high.

#111 Ian Minaar set the quickest time, edging out #64 Shayne Steenkamp by just 0.066 seconds. Both riders earned their spots in the final after a great showdown.

The Ladies Final delivered edge-of-the-seat racing right to the final lap. #484 Cheyenne De Lima kept her cool out front despite relentless pressure from #16 Kelly Beegte.

De Lima secured a well-earned victory, with Beegte close behind and #603 Marlinka Zurich completing the podium.

The Pro Mini Final produced fantastic action from start to finish. #30 Brody Bircher dominated with a confident, controlled ride to take the win.

Behind him, #85 Ross Mackenzie secured second place, while #312 Qhamani Thu pushed hard to the line for third.

The main event of the day saw the Pro Class line up with R8,000 on the line for the winner. From the gate drop, it was non-stop action filled with close calls and relentless pressure.

#337 Slade Smith rose to the occasion, taking the win and the top steop. #450 Luke Grundy secured second place and #300 Trent Valsecchi completed the podium after another all-out performance.

Event Wrap-Up

The day wrapped up on a high with prize giving, giving riders and teams a well-deserved moment on the podium. Live entertainment from Veranda Panda kept the crowd around and the energy high, rounding out the event with good, clean family fun.

A full day of racing, atmosphere and entertainment made SA Supercross Round 1 one to remember. The series heads to the Free State for Round 2 on 11 April at Sandtrax.
