I spend 90% of my life on a motorcycle and having a good helmet is extremely important to me and they have saved me from serious injury during the occasional fall… it does happen from time to time and hence the reason we wear safety gear.Â
Trying to save a couple of bucks here and there and skimping on the quality of your crash gear is just stupid, that’s like only giving your girl half a birth control tablet to save money then getting all angry when she falls pregnant. Always by the absolute best motorcycle safety gear you can afford.Â
I recently got a Scorpion ADF-9000 Air Adv Helmet and I have done about 2000 km with it in temperatures up to 34 degrees Celsius.
Â
I am fortunate to have a few motorcycles at my disposal and have ridden a GS1250 and a Triumph 900 Rally Pro during the 2000 km I have used the Scorpion.
My biggest bug bear is ventilation in helmets for cooling, especially when muscling big adventure bikes through difficult sections under our African sun. I found ventilation to be more than adequate and as good if not better than most other helmets I have ridden with.
Another pet peeve of mine is wind noise in adventure helmets, which after a long day in the saddle leaves you tired and with ringing ears. I found the Scorpion to be much better than any other helmet I have ridden with to date when it comes to wind noise as well as stability in strong winds, another point that becomes an issue when riding long distances and at speed. I also enjoy the dual sun visor system a lot.
Comfort wise, the interior of the Scorpion ADF-9000 is superb. It fits snugly and is soft to the touch. I found that it dries out really quickly and keeps my head cool and dry. The visor is brilliant as it does not move around due to its shape. Also, I believe the shape also helps make the helmet very quiet. The only problem I had with the ADF-9000 was very minor and quite recent, the peak seemed to vibrate, (rattle), a bit coming from the mounting point to the helmet shell, but I managed to rectify that with a fair amount of ease and ingenuity.
I did enquire about the weight as it does feel a little heavier than other helmets.
The importer/distributor did advise that all new helmets these days have to comply with ECE 22.06 standards, which does make them heavier with all the added safety features than the older ECE 22.05 compliance helmets.Â
All in all, and in my humble opinion it is the best adventure helmet I have ridden with in 35 years of adventure riding, covering about one million kilometres in that time.
The Scorpion ADF-9000 Air Helmet comes standard with a 5-year warranty, the main construction is TCT Composite same as the R1 MOTOGP helmet, Inflatable cheek pad system for customisable fit and comfort. The chinstrap has a Micrometric buckle and high strength titanium Double D rings and a dark smoke visor as well as a Pinlock MaxVision are standard kit. This helmet is also dual homologated, giving you the best features of both worlds.
The visor is of the Ellip-Tec variety which allows for easy, secure and tool-less visor changes in seconds. Everclear, is another one of its Trademarked features,
All of the Scorpion Exo visors, as well as the optional tinted, are EverClear. Uniquely, Scorpion sun visors are also treated with EverClear, on both sides. Each visor is anti scratch and has a special hydrophobic coating and thermo welding that gets rid of the fog.
Exolon – Scorpion’s shatter-resistant visor is designed to do much more than just block blinding sun and oncoming roost.
The Aerotuned visor is aerodynamically designed to reduce drag and maximise airflow while the pliable, advanced polymer material provides memory, holds its shape and is shatter-resistant.
Another really cool feature is it is EXO-COM prepared, meaning Scorpions own comms systems slots in easily.Â
